At the Community Forum on policing on July 9, 2020, Manhattan Beach Police Chief Derrick Abell said that people should "get the facts" about racial equity in policing for themselves. This website allows members of the community to do exactly that. Check out a quick overview below, and click through the rest of our website to learn how to access public data released by the police department, read our calculations and statistics drawn from that data, and discover action items for creating change.

All of the data on this website was obtained by filing California Public Records Act requests. More information on filing a CPRA request, and the specific data we've asked for, is available on our Requested Public Data page. Broadly, we've asked for information on the racial, ethnic, and gender breakdown of arrests, stops, and all other interactions with the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

The police department's own data shows that if you are a Black person in Manhattan Beach, you are 120 times more likely to be arrested than a white person in Manhattan Beach. If you are a Latinx person in Manhattan Beach, you are 9 times more likely to be arrested than a white person in Manhattan Beach. We know from the tourism data that Manhattan Beach receives an average of 10,400 visitors per day. For the arrest rate to be equitable, we would have to have 21,025 Black people visit Manhattan Beach on average per day—over twice as many people of all races who visit Manhattan Beach on any given day.

In order to make the data equitable for Latinx people, there would need to be 26,636 Latinx people visiting Manhattan Beach on average per day—again over twice as many. Learn more about our data, calculations, and conclusions on our Analyses page.

This data is incredibly concerning and impossible to ignore. If we're going to say that we stand for equity and justice in Manhattan Beach, we all need to take action to address these glaring disparities. Learn more about what you can do through our Action Toolkit.
